Who’s Who
Vicar: Canon Keith Smalldon Tel : 01792 299884 & 07977 263690 E-Mail: keithsmalldon@btinternet.com Biography: Canon Keith was born in Newport in 1948. After a variety of jobs including bank clerk and reading gas meters Keith trained for the ministry at St John’s College Ystrad Meurig and at St Michael’s College in Llandaff. Following Curacies in Cwmbran and in Chepstow, Keith went to England, to the Bradford Diocese where he was Diocesan Youth Adviser. This was followed by a spell as a Senior Training Officer for Bradford Metropolitan Council and then to Manchester Diocese as Diocesan Youth and Community Officer linked for a while with Vicar of St James in Bury. From the earliest days in ministry Keith was always interested in the delivery of training and in 1990 he moved to the Diocese of Carlisle as Clergy Training Adviser and Vicar of Thursby. After this it was time to put his theories of ministry into practice and Keith became Team Rector of two very large team ministries, firstly at Daventry in the Peterborough Diocese and then home to Wales to be Team Rector of Llantwit Major in the Llandaff Diocese. A return to mainstream training beckoned and Keith accepted the offer to become Director of Ministry and Residentiary Canon in the Diocese of Swansea & Brecon. For the first five years this was based at Brecon Cathedral but then Keith wished to “return to the coalface” as he put it so the job was redeployed to be linked with Vicar of St Barnabas in Swansea. Canon Keith holds a Diploma in Theology from the University of Wales, a degree in Humanities from the Open University and a Masters in Applied Theology from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. A keen photographer, Keith is also addicted to film soundtracks and railways, especially narrow gauge with the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway in Kent being a particular favourite. He follows rugby league [Salford], rugby union [the Whites], soccer [many teams] and speedway [Belle Vue Aces]. Keith is also a former member at Northants and Glamorgan cricket clubs. Keith met Anne whilst they both worked for the Midland Bank. They married in 1969 and have two children and three grandchildren
